This post must start with a huge thank you to Jonathan M. for recommending Battle Flag to GJM to create a range of flags to compliment GJM’s superb new Gringo 40s miniatures.

Having just got of the telephone with Ged at GJM, I am pleased to announce that a new range of Mexican American War flags from Battle Flag will be released in 40mm to compliment GJM,s excellent  new range of 40mm Mex-Am War miniatures.  

Battle Flag will support the range with a full range of beautiful Regimental and National Colours for the U.S. and Mexican forces.

The first release will cover the U.S Regular Infantry and Volunteer Regiments with the Mexican forces to follow shortly.

Cry' God for Harry, England and St. George! Battle Flag release Wargame flags for the English at Agincourt

Following on from the First Hundred Years War set of wargame flags, “The Knights of The Black Prince”, I have had a lot of requests for flag sets for Agincourt and the War of the Roses.

The good news is that not only will we be releasing flags sets for all of the major Combatants of both periods but that the first sheet of model flags for the Battle of Agincourt is ready now.

It goes without saying that the first set of wargame flags had to be for Henry V.

 Henry V is my favorite of all Shakespeare plays, what with the stirring St. Crispin’s Day speech just before the battle of Agincourt itself and the immortal line before storming the walls of Harfleur, “Cry God, for Harry, England and St. George!”

The first flag sheet for the War of the Roses will be next along with a sheet of flags bearing the Cross of St George.

I am of up to Towton to visit the battlefield this week, just for a bit of inspiration you understand; a trip which has nothing to do with the fine Yorkshire ales that will need to be imbibed to liberate the artistic juices.

The Flags of Montrose's Irish Brigade (Part Two)

Having now gotten my hands on the excellent little booklet, Scots Armies of the 17th Century. The Royalist Armies 1639-46 by Stuart Reid I have spent the last few days working on the flags of Montrose's Irish.

The second sheet of wargame flags in the series is now ready and carries the image of Montrose and the quotation from,My Dear and Only Love, which will be a feature of these particular sheets of model flags to help identify them in listings etc.

This particular sheet includes the blue flag with the Virgin and child crushing the head of a serpent and the white flag bearing a blood red crucifix in the Irish style.

My reasoning for the Celtic Cross rather than a simple Crucifix is that having grown up near an  old Chapel in County Tyrone I remembered the  graveyard was full of Celtic crosses rather than the standard crucifix. So would it not make sense to have this style of Cross emblazoned on the Standard of Irish soldiers of the 17th Century. It certainly gives the flag a lot more flair.

The Flags of Montrose's Irish Brigade Now Available From Battle Flag

The latest sheet of 25mm wargame flags in Battle Flags English Civil War series of flags represents two of the banners carried by the Irish of Montrose’s Irish Brigade.


The first shows Christ carrying the Cross on a green field and the second the medieval pictogram IHS is emblazoned on a red field.


This is the first of six sheets of wargame flags covering the colourful flags and banners of Montrose’s Regiments of Irish.

Trans Mississippi Department and Kentucky Orphan Brigade Wargame Flags From Battle Flag

This week’s releases include two brand new sheets of wargame flags covering the flags and standards of the Trans Mississippi Department and Kentucky’s Orphan Brigade.

Both sheets of flags are available in 25mm, 20mm, and 15mm with 54mm available in two sheet sets.

It is amazing what you see when you create an analytical study of a flag. The script and Battle Honors on the 6^th Kentucky for instance demonstrate not only different styles but different writing techniques. The Battle Honors were not all written in the same hand and one can only imagine the story that in itself tells.

The Standard of the 1st Texas Infantry From Battle Flag.

The first Confederate promo figure is now finished. As is now becoming the norm with Battle Flag ACW promo pics the figure is from the excellent Perry Miniatures 28mm range.

Representing a standard bearer of the 1st Texas Infantry charging with the colours. Known as the Wigfall it was made by Lula Wigfall, daughter of the regiment's first colonel, Louis T. Wigfall, and was presented to the 1st Texas in the summer of 1861.

As the battle honors attest, the 1st Texas fought under this flag throughout the Peninsula Campaign. The Texans carried it through the battle of Second Manassas in August 1862 and on into Maryland during Lee's first invasion of the North.

At the Battle of Antietam, in Miller's cornfield  the 1st Texas suffered 82.3 percent casualties, being the highest number of killed and wounded suffered by any single unit North or South in a single action during the entire war. During the battle no less than nine men fell carrying this flag. When the ninth standard bearer was killed, the flag was lost. It was picked up from among the Texas dead by a Union soldier. 

The "Wigfall" standard from Battle Flag is from the Hoods Texas Brigade set. The set comes as a plate sheet  and contains no less than 11 standards. The battle flags and standards for 1st Texas, 4th Texas, 5th Texas , 18th Georgia, 3rd Arhansas, Hamptons Legion are all beautifully represented and are a superb addition to anyone who wargames or collects Hood's Texas Brigade. The set is available as a plate in 15mm, 25/28mm and as a two plate set in 54mm from Battle-Flag.com.

Battle Flag Release Wargame Flags of ACW Confederate General John Bell Hood's Texas Brigade

Today’s release covers the flags of the tenacious Confederate General John Bell Hood’s Texas Brigade. Represented are the flags of 1st, 4th and 5th Texas Infantry Regiments and the standards of the 18th Georgia Infantry, Hampton’s Legion and the 3rd Arkansas Infantry.

As with all our Battle Flag wargame sheets a lot of consideration is given to the layout of the miniature flags to maximize the aesthetic quality of the finished product. With a picture of General Hood surrounded with the flags and standards of his Texas Brigade Regiments this is we believe the most attractive yet. In fact one is now framed and hanging on the Studio wall.

War Game Battle Flag Tutorial

I want to ensure that my customers get the most from their purchase and are able to create beautiful and realistic flags for their miniatures. To that end I have created this tutorial that should allow anyone with basic skills and a few simple tools to create a show piece flag or flags for their model army.

Only a good pair of scissors, a couple of pieces of clean paper, model flag staff, glue stick and of course your chosen Battle Flag are required. The glue stick is very important as this form of adhesive has proven itself to be by far the most effective for assembling flags from the Battle Flag range.

Having cleared a suitable working area the first task is to simply cut your chosen Battle Flag from the carrier sheet. This can be done quite roughly and you should ensure that there is a fair amount of spare border around the flag. Do not try and cut the flag accurately from the sheet.

Once the flag has been removed now is the time to cut it accurately. Take your time and ensure that your cuts are straight. Some might want to use a ruler and craft knife for this, if you do please be careful, personally I prefer scissors.

Once the flag has been cut out, fold the flag in half at the midpoint. All Battle Flag’s have a central portion that is included specifically to wrap around the shaft.

The fold must be accurate and I find that it is best to first fold it lightly and then to place between the two pieces of paper and crease it heavily with my finger tip. The paper will ensure that the flag remains clean of grease etc.

Once properly folded and creased open your Battle Flag again and place it face down on clean paper. Then holding the flag firmly apply a good amount of glue stick to the rear of the flag. The whole of the back should be covered not just half or part and again this is important to ensure a good finish.

Place the flag pole into the crease and fold the flag over pressing the flag gently into place into place.

Then having checked the alignment for a final time place the flag on the table between the clean paper and press firmly.

Once flattened satisfactorily you can now add a few flowing curves. This can be done freehand or with the aid of a paintbrush handle or similar. Take your time as you do not want to add creases just gentle curves.

When the glue is set you will have quite a rigid structure and you can now attach the finished standard to the figure.
